Pokedex

Here is the coding behind the pokedex. The block on the upper left is for squirtle only, but the code is duplicated for bulbasaur and charmander, with the respective images loaded into them. The bottom right is a jitter made to hold the background of the pokedex used to also hide the pokemon not currently selected.scrnshot_pokedexThe body of the code is primarily message triggers that come from the bangs from makey makey input, and subsequently switch the layers that each pokemon is displayed on, moving the one displayed to layer 3 and the ones hidden to layer 0. The Background is on layer 2 to hide the default layer one that the others start on so that the text doesn’t start overlapping.

Unfortunately i couldnt get sound to work again since the lab speakers don’t work and now when I attempt to run it on my laptop where it originally started, it crashes Max instead and wont load in any of the images, and ignores the background.

  1. As a heads up, the video is set to private.
One thing I particularly liked about your submission was the actual interface of the the piece. When working with the MaKeyMakey kits, I was thrilled by how touching a piece of paper with my hands caused sounds and music and animated things to happen in real life. It felt magical. I believe your papercraft pokedex really captured that magical feeling and allowed me to believe that I was actually using a fantasy piece of equipment in the everyday world.

  2. As a suggestion – for a future project, or if you want to take this to a new level – you can make the Pokedex out of a stronger material – something like cardboard or plastic may work. That way, with some paint you can decorate it using the actual colors – it will look even better. Plus, paint doesn’t weaken other materials as much as regular paper.

  3. Remembering what I saw from in class, I love the idea of making a Pokedex that responds from real input. More than that, your setup had the device boxy like an actual Pokedex. The graphite lines to make it work were also cleverly arranged.

  4. I am biased

Great project, nicely executed. As with every project, I wish we had all the time and resources in the world to make it perfect: A 3D printed or manufactured or machined or crafted Pokedex, all Pokemon in it and so on. This is a great preview of what is possible.
